BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Battered wives and husbands aren't the only victims of domestic violence. The children who grow up in those homes may have hidden bruises that can hurt forever.

"As humans we learn not just by doing, but we learn by what we see. We can learn by modeling. And so for kids in a domestic violence situation, the implications are just horrendous," said Dr. Josh Claypow, School of Public Health, UAB.
"And it can range everything from emotional problems things like increased chance of anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, depression... things like that, to learning disabilities and problems in school to more aggressive behavior in school in children and then as things go on setting them up for problems as teens and adults."

As these children advance in age, the stage is set for a continued cycle of violence.
